Finally, Hannah turned to discover Susanna standing in the garden in her night dress. She looked quite distressed.
âOh, Hannah,â she cried. Her face was drawn and distraught. âI saw. I should have told you before.â
âTold me what?â Hannah asked, puzzled by her cousinâs reaction, trying desperately not to betray her emotions. Her cousin grabbed her hand.
âCome back to my room and we will talk,â she answered. Hannah shook her head. âNo, tell me now,â Hannah stubbornly refused.
Susanna hesitated momentarily. âHannah, Marcusâ¦â She sighed and breathed deeply. âMarcus is married.â
âMarried?â Shock vibrated through her. Hannah heard herself ask. âThen why would he act in that manner? Why would no one tell me?â
Susanna looked at her. âCome. Weâll talk.â
In a fog, Hannah followed Susanna to her room where she closed her door tightly. âRemember when I told you he had lived down the street? He lived here with his family, his wife and child. If I remember correctly she was with child when she left. I met her on a few occasions. A haughty woman. I believe she felt the colonies beneath her. If Iâm not mistaken, sheâs a daughter of a duke of some sort. She bragged about returning to their estate in England, away from the wilds of the colonies. From what I gather, heâs the second son of an earl.â
Hannah sat and listened to her cousinâs words. Comprehension of what her cousin said slowly sank in. âI appreciate your frankness, cousin, but donât concern yourself. Heâs leaving, and I assure you Iâll stay as far from him as possible upon his return if Iâm still here. Heâs playing with me.â
Susanna gave her a quick nod, but a half-fearful look lingered in her eyes. âHannah, with what youâre doing, it would be for the best. I couldnât bear if anything happened to you. I should have said something before because Iâve seen his fascination with you. I have heard that men like him marry for position, but loveâ¦â
âNo, donât say that.â Hannah shook her head. âItâs not a fascination, Susanna. Heâs trying to intimidate me. That is all. He knew of me before the raid. I donât believe he feels Iâm as helpless as I pretend.â Hannah reached over and squeezed Susannaâs hand.
Susanna shook her head. âI hope youâre right. With your Gabriel leaving you, I couldnât blame you ifâ¦:
Hannah stood. Her voice quivered. âGabriel hasnât abandoned me. Obviously, he was detained and couldnâtâ¦â She paused, for in truth she couldnât understand why he had left her here. âIâll take heed, I promise. I wonât trust anyone. Clearly, they all look down upon us. To play me soâ¦as if Iâm no better than a common whore. No, cousin. I wonât be treated such, not without reason.â
âTake care with that reason, Hannah,â Susanna answered.

Hannah steamed over Marcus's behavior. She couldnât stop thinking about it. How dare he! But in reality, should she have expected less? Hadnât she a job to do? Wasnât he a distraction? His departure alleviated a pressure she hadn't comprehended existed until he was no longer in the scene.
